Job Summary
Process new client intakes, complete preliminary documentation, and assign beds. Assist in planning recreational activities, serve meals, and escort clients to appointments while ensuring rule compliance. Maintain daily logs, visitor records, and electronic shift summaries; generate client census and curfew violation reports. Utilize Safe Crisis Management to respond to incidents and document events. Conduct routine equipment inventory and fire drills. Foster a nurturing environment for shelter clients while informing staff of any health or safety issues. This role operates all shifts at Lantern Community Services' single adult male shelter in Jamaica, Queens, NY.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, HSE, or GED
- 2 years of experience working in a shelter setting, security, customer service, hospital patient care, etc.
- Food handler's certification
- Willingness to obtain food handler's certification within 3 months
- Adeptness and comfort with crisis intervention
- Basic Computer Skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to get along with clients of various cultures and backgrounds
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Proven organization and logistical skills
- Ability to respond to and assess urgent situations
- Willingness to work all shifts
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, climb stairs, and/or kneel
Desired Qualifications
- Prior experience providing compassionate care to vulnerable populations
- Experience working in a homeless shelter
- Experience working with mental illness
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
