Job Summary
Establish, maintain, and modify plants, plots, temporary structures, and program components while participating in general applied research activities. Collect, prepare, and analyze samples, then enter data into systems. Operate equipment and tools in offices, laboratories, greenhouses, high tunnels, and open fields while keeping accurate records. Perform tasks individually or as part of a group under supervision of program faculty and staff leads.
Required Qualifications
- high school diploma
- Familiarity with vegetable crop management, including using sustainable-organic approaches, seeding, transplanting, pruning and trellising, transplant production, nutrient and irrigation management, pest, weed, and disease control, irrigation system setup and management, and the use of films, fabrics and protective structures
- Familiarity with experimentation
- Familiarity with workplace safety practices
- Ability to apply principles to solve problems
- Ability to help maintain a friendly atmosphere in the work unit
- Ability to perform working alone or as a member of a team
- Ability to contribute to the successful completion of research studies
- Ability to calculate fractions, decimals, and percents
- Ability to read, copy and complete routine forms
- Ability to gather, collate, and classify samples and information according to established methods
- Ability to use common sense and knowledge of the vegetable program goals and objectives to carry out written and oral instructions
- Ability to show physical fitness including in outdoor agricultural settings and situations
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Ability to apply what is demonstrated, instructed, taught, and learned
- Skill in operating equipment and tools commonly used in office, laboratory, greenhouse, high tunnel, greenhouse, and open field settings
- Skill in completing routine operations common in applied research office, laboratory, greenhouse, high tunnel, greenhouse, and open field settings
- Successful completion of a background check
- Completion of a drug screen or physical
