Job Summary
Mass Spectrometry–focused Research Technician III position at HHMI/Janelia shared resource. The role entails performing sample preparation including biomolecule extractions, isotope labeling, protein digestion, LC fractionation, and SPE cleanup; operating and maintaining LC-MS/MS instruments; reporting QC assessments of instrument performance; maintaining detailed experimental records; and assisting in optimizing/validating metabolomics, lipidomics, and/or proteomics protocols. The incumbent may train junior laboratory personnel and contribute to a collaborative, problem-solving environment across multiple labs and projects. The role requires a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or related field (Master's preferred) with hands-on metabolomics/proteomics experience, proficiency with mass spectrometry software, and strong organizational and communication skills. The position is based in Ashburn, VA, within HHMI's Mass Spectrometry Department at Janelia Research Campus, and offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits. Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a closely related field
- 4 years hands-on experience with metabolomic, lipidomic or proteomic sample preparation (BS) or 2 years with MS (MS)
- experience operating and maintaining LC-MS/MS systems
- proficiency with mass spectrometer operating software (e.g., Thermo Xcalibur)
- experience with data analysis tools such as Compound Discoverer, LipidSearch, MS-DIAL, Skyline, Proteome Discoverer, MaxQuant, DIA-NN, or FragPipe
- strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a team
- ability to maintain accurate lab records and follow safety procedures
