Research Software Engineer / Staff Scientist

Job Summary
Research Software Engineer with a dual focus on software development and research to support university research groups. Provides software development and consulting services to researchers, offers one-on-one and group research support from software/Linux/data/infrastructure perspectives, mentors peers, and may contribute to teaching and other research infrastructure. Emphasizes open science practices, experience in deep learning with PyTorch, interdisciplinary research, and the ability to advise on AI projects across diverse fields. Primary workplace is Otaniemi, Espoo (Helsinki region) with hybrid work options; openness to collaborating across top research groups and contributing to open-source initiatives. Strong communication, organizational skills, and a proactive, collaborative mindset are required; English proficiency is essential. Expected to engage in professional development, open-source contributions, and to align with the broader mission of enabling impactful computational research at Aalto University.
Required Qualifications
- PhD degree with research experience in computational fields or Software developer/computational scientist with strong software/open source/Linux background and scientific computing experience
- Masters degree or equivalent experience
- Hands-on experience in deep learning with PyTorch
- Interdisciplinary research experience and research software engineer–type experience enabling collaboration across fields
- Ability to mentor and collaborate with researchers; strong communication and organizational skills; independent working style; willingness to learn and adapt
- Experience with open-source software, open science practices, and software development tools (version control)
- Proficiency in written and spoken English; ability to communicate across research groups
- Presence in Finland is required; residence in the Helsinki metropolitan area is strongly recommended
- Willingness to contribute to teaching or other research infrastructure support as needed
- Experience in an Finnish university work environment is highly beneficial
