Job Summary
Conduct mass spectrometry and proteomics methods to identify and characterize biological threat agents, including proteins and small molecular weight toxins. Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot lab equipment such as orbitrap, triple-quadrupole, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometers alongside liquid chromatography systems. Develop protocols, Standard Operating Procedures, and work instructions while maintaining accurate records in the Laboratory Information Management System. Assist with BSL-2 procedures, toxin analysis, and quality management system investigations. Work on assignments requiring judgment and initiative within defined practices, utilizing critical thinking to resolve complex technical problems in a high containment environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (or equivalent) in a scientific discipline
- Minimum of 4 years of related experience
- Master's degree
- Minimum of 2 years of related experience
- Experience operating mass spectrometry instrumentation such as orbitrap, triple quadrupole, and MALDI TOF
- Experience with sample preparation techniques such as protein digestion, SDS-PAGE, solid phase extraction, and liquid-liquid extraction
- Ability to analyze and interpret mass spectrometry data using informatics tools such as Proteome Discoverer, Compound Discoverer, MassHunter, Skyline, MaxQuant, FragPipe and MS-Dial
- Intermediate scientific proficiency in laboratory functions
- Ability to identify issues with laboratory protocols, procedures, and experimental plans
- Proficiency and clarity of oral and written communications
- Exemplary organizational skills
- Proven track record of working effectively both independently and as a team player
- Citizen of the United States
- Ability to obtain and maintain an interim secret clearance leading to a top-secret clearance
- Suitability for DHS
- Favorable adjudication of the Department of Justice (DoJ) for select agent access
- Participation in the Immunization Program
- Medical Surveillance Program
- Enrollment in the Personnel Reliability Program (PRP)
- Ability to work on multiple science tasks simultaneously
- Ability to work on assignments outside of area of expertise
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Self-sufficient in monitoring and reporting on quality, and compliance
- Ability to work in accordance with NBACC's management system (e.g., ISO)
