Job Summary
Research Assistant position at Texas A&M AgriLife focused on Plant Pathology and Genetics research. Responsibilities include culturing isolates from diseased pecan tissue, field ratings of pest/disease parameters, DNA/RNA extractions, PCR amplification, sequencing library prep, tissue culture, and maintaining a pest/herbarium collection. Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field, lab skills in microbiology/plant biology, and ability to work in hot/humid field conditions. Not eligible for visa sponsorship; temporary end date Aug 31, 2027.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Soil & Crop Sciences or related field
- Preferred: 1 year of specialized experience in plant pathology, genetics, agricultural or field research
- BSL1+ Laboratory Experience (preferably Microbiology or Plant Biology)
- Ability to obtain U.S. Driver’s License
- Ability to work under adverse conditions (heat/humidity)
- Ability to maintain detailed lab notebooks and documentation
- Ability to write reports and communicate with colleagues/farmers
- PCR, qPCR, DNA sequencing experience
- Tissue culture/micropropagation experience
- Ability to lift >50 lbs
- Knowledge of diseases, insects, pests affecting pecans and hickories
