Job Summary
Renovation Underwriter responsible for evaluating risk and rendering credit decisions on renovation loan applications in accordance with agency guidelines and company policy. Requires in-depth knowledge of standard mortgage underwriting principles and specialized renovation lending programs (FHA 203(k), Fannie Mae HomeStyle, Freddie Mac CHOICERenovation, VA renovation, SONYMA RemodelNY). Duties include full credit underwriting within posted turn times, communicating conditions, guiding fellow underwriters, and ensuring compliance with program requirements. Responsibilities also cover evaluating project feasibility, contractor documentation, as-completed appraisals, renovation escrow calculations, post-closing draw administration, and collaboration with the Renovation Lending Analyst and closing team. Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills, with ability to mentor processing/origination staff and adhere to evolving guidelines.
Required Qualifications
- A college degree with two years related experience and/or training
- Minimum two years prior mortgage underwriting experience with a strong understanding of credit analysis, collateral evaluation, and agency guidelines
- Direct experience underwriting renovation loan products (FHA 203k, Fannie Mae HomeStyle, Freddie Mac CHOICERenovation, VA renovation, or SONYMA) strongly preferred
- DE/SAR certifications preferred; CHUMS ID required for FHA renovation underwriting
