Job Summary
Perform high-volume spay/neuter surgeries for shelter dogs and cats while examining, diagnosing, and treating a variety of medical conditions. Develop treatment plans, prescribe medications, and provide preventive care including vaccinations and parasite prevention. Monitor surgical patients for post-operative care and collaborate with veterinary technicians to ensure animals are medically ready for adoption, foster, or transfer. Maintain accurate medical records using the electronic shelter management system and provide compassionate, humane euthanasia when necessary. Requires a DVM degree, active Florida license, and experience in shelter medicine or high-volume surgery.
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree (or equivalent)
- Active, unrestricted Florida veterinary license
- Have strong surgical and clinical skills with confidence working independently
- Communicate well with veterinary teams, shelter staff, volunteers, and foster caregivers
- Thrive in collaborative environments while taking ownership of patient care
- Handle challenging and emotional situations with professionalism, empathy, and resilience
- Available to work scheduled relief shifts as needed
- Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter surgery
- Comfortable performing routine canine and feline surgeries
- Experience with diagnostics, preventive medicine, and electronic medical records
- Fear Free Shelter Certification
- Familiarity with Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) Guidelines
