Job Summary
Conduct administrative support for the Economic Development staff, including assisting with permit applications, preparing for board meetings, and receiving, sorting, and inputting permit applications using iWorq. Collect research to support economic development projects, maintain department records, and provide in-person and telephone customer service to businesses and residents. Prepare PowerPoint presentations for public meetings and assist with posting public notices and mailing letters for hearings. Attend bi-weekly ticket appeal meetings and participate in department initiatives while adhering to confidentiality standards. Work part-time, 20-22 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, earning $12.00 - $15.00/hour. Gain hands-on experience in urban planning, zoning ordinances, and historic preservation within the City of Covington's revitalization efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a college or university program, pursuing a degree in business, economics, urban planning, political science, real estate, or a related field
- Junior, senior, or graduate student
- Above-average academic record
- A strong interest in public service, urban planning, and economic development
- Basic understanding of zoning laws, urban planning, and historic preservation
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Understanding of the regulatory process for economic development in a municipal context
- Excellent customer service skills, both in-person and over the phone
- Strong communication and writing skills, including the ability to compose clear and accurate reports
- Good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks at once
- Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in administrative tasks
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to interact professionally with colleagues, business owners, and residents
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Strong willingness to learn and contribute to the success of the Economic Development Department
- Must have a professional understanding of the work environment and adhere to confidentiality standards
- Ability to complete basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
- Telephone skills and the confidence to call businesses and homeowners
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and/or graphics software
- Experience with GIS and/or graphics software
- Familiarity with zoning or historic preservation
- Strong understanding of economic development principles
