Job Summary

Registered Veterinary Technologists (RVTs) in Animal Care Services provide high-level surgical and technical support for the animal-based research community at UBC. Responsibilities include anesthesia administration and monitoring, surgical assistance, postoperative care, euthanasia, collection of bio-samples, preparation of surgical rooms and instruments, and maintaining medical records. The role involves indirect and direct animal care across multiple facilities (Centre for Comparative Medicine, Centre for Disease Modeling, Modified Barrier Facility), potential local travel between sites, inventory management of supplies including controlled drugs, adherence to Canadian Council on Animal Care guidelines and safety protocols, handling hazardous and radioactive materials, and collaboration with Clinical Veterinarians, ACTs, researchers, and project managers. Candidates should have a Diploma in Veterinary Technology with RVT designation, and typically a minimum of three years of related experience, with preferred CALAS RLAT. The position supports a multi-species facility, requires strong problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and the ability to work in both CL1 and CL2 environments, and accommodates varied shifts including evenings and weekends.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma in Veterinary Technology required
  • Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) designation required
  • Experience: minimum three years of related experience or equivalent
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including equity, diversity and inclusion training/compliance
  • Experience with laboratory animal care and surgical procedures; familiar with CCAC guidelines; ability to work with hazardous materials and radioisotopes; ability to travel to satellite facilities; strong record-keeping and safety protocol adherence
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 25 kgs and working in environments with dander, odors, excreta and noise
