Job Summary

Assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders in high-acuity inpatient settings, including intensive care, emergency department, and step-down units. Collects and analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimens to determine gas levels and measures lung capacity to assess impaired function. Administers physician-prescribed treatments for breathing abnormalities and assumes primary responsibility for respiratory care treatments, including oversight of respiratory therapy technicians. Provides advanced life-support therapies such as mechanical ventilation and airway management while responding quickly to emergent situations. Requires graduation from a CoArc-approved program, South Carolina licensure, CRT credentialing, and current BLS certification. Rotational shifts, weekends, and holidays as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a program approved by CoArc (Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care) or a successor accrediting authority
  • Licensed as a respiratory care practitioner by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations Board of Medical Examiners
  • Credentialed as a Credentialed Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
  • Registry eligibility for the Advanced_Practitioner Examination administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care
  • Successful registration for the Advanced_Practitioner Examination within the first eighteen months of employment
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted
  • Ability to lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to thirty-six inches unassisted
  • Ability to lift from thirty-six" to overhead 25 lbs
  • Ability to exert up to 50lbs. of force
  • Ability to maintain vision 20/40 corrected
  • Ability to match or discriminate between colors
  • Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception
  • Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction
  • Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations
  • Ability to work rotating shifts
  • Ability to work overtime as required
  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required
  • Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and as required
  • Ability to work in a latex safe environment
