Job Summary

Provide education to patients and families regarding deficits and health promotion interventions while supporting nursing care and participating in inter-professional teams. Contribute to care planning processes and deliver safe, competent care within your scope of practice for neurological populations requiring trach care, suctioning, and bowel/bladder management. Actively participate in mentoring RPN students and new staff, and engage in professional and hospital-wide initiatives. Demonstrate strong health assessment skills to identify and monitor clinical status changes, intervening appropriately with behavioral management strategies for severe dysfunction. Maintain compliance with patient safety policies and standards of practice.

Required Qualifications

  • Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario (General Certificate) and member in good standing
  • Diploma preparation as an RPN in a recognized education program for Nursing
  • Completion of a health assessment/physical assessment course from an accredited college or university in the past to 3 years (or equivalent)
  • Recent health assessment course
  • Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support (C level) Heart Saver Plus (Canada)
  • Current medication certificate (if not included in diploma program)
  • Medical asepsis (if not included in diploma program)
  • Recent experience in rehabilitation nursing care of neurological patient populations
  • Experience providing care to patients who require trach care, suctioning, tube feeding and bowel and bladder management
  • Familiarity with principles of rehabilitation and practice implications
  • Ability to assess and care for patients with multiple medical needs
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, assess, and monitor clinical status and intervene appropriately with changes in clinical status
  • Ability to appropriately care for patients who present with severe behavioral dysfunction, including engagement and re-direction
  • Ability to recognize changes in behavior and follow prescribed behavioral management strategies
  • Ability to appropriately care for patients who present with severe cognitive and physical impairment
  • Knowledge of standards of practice and applicable health care legislation
  • Computer proficiency or willingness to pursue appropriate computer training
  • Ability to demonstrate strong health assessment skills
  • Current UHN employees must have successfully completed their probationary period, have a good employee record along with satisfactory attendance in accordance with UHN's attendance management program, to be eligible for consideration
  • A Criminal Record Check

Desired Qualifications

  • Diploma preparation as an RPN in a recognized education program for Nursing preferred
