Job Summary
Registered Pharmacy Technician (Pharmacy Practice Assistant) provides safe, patient-centered pharmaceutical care under pharmacist supervision. Responsibilities include compounding sterile and non-sterile dosage forms, dispensing medications to inpatients and outpatients in unit dose, physician order entry, working with automation and CIVA systems, inventory control, medication reconciliation, and participation in quality programs and patient safety initiatives. The role supports chemotherapy preparation, distribution of narcotics, and adherence to relevant regulations. Requires graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program and NS licensure; BLS required; experience in hospital settings and knowledge of sterile technique, chemotherapy precautions, and unit dose distribution are assets. Hours are permanent part-time (30 hours biweekly); compensation ranges per hour and benefits are listed.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program
- Licensure and registration in Nova Scotia as a Pharmacy Technician (NSPR) required
- Drug administration by injection technical permit (Pharmacy Technician) an asset
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required
- Experience as a pharmacy technician/pharmacy practice assistant, preferably in a hospital, an asset
- Knowledge of sterile technique and special precautions used with chemotherapy are an asset
- Experience in unit dose drug distribution systems, automation technology, decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, an asset
- Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping
- Demonstrated good decision making and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medications
- Knowledge of the law and regulations pertaining to the receipt, storage and distribution of prescription and narcotic drugs
- Basic typing skills or computer/keyboard experience; skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, etc.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
