Job Summary
Registered Pharmacy Technician (Pharmacy Practice Assistant) responsible for obtaining a best possible medication history (BPMH) for patients admitted from the emergency department to inpatient units or seen in surgery preassessment and other inpatient/outpatient settings; conducts BPMH interviews with patients and families, gathers information from the Drug Information System, documents BPMH for admission medication orders, reconciles orders, and communicates with staff and physicians regarding reconciliation. Acts as a resource to staff and physicians, directs team members to complete BPMH, and confirms accuracy with community care providers or patient records. Requires licensure/registration in NS, hospital experience preferred, Basic Life Support, knowledge of sterile technique and chemotherapy precautions, unit-dose distribution systems, and strong math and pharmacy terminology skills.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program
- Licensure and registration in Nova Scotia as a Pharmacy Technician (NSPR) required
- Drug administration by injection technical permit (Pharmacy Technician) an asset
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required
- Experience as a pharmacy technician/pharmacy practice assistant, preferably in a hospital, an asset
- Knowledge of sterile technique and special precautions used with chemotherapy are an asset
- Experience in unit dose drug distribution systems, automation technology, decentralized medication dispensing cabinets, an asset
- Knowledge of medical terminology, inventory control and record keeping
- Demonstrated good decision making and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medications
- Knowledge of the law and regulations pertaining to the receipt, storage and distribution of prescription and narcotic drugs
- Basic typing skills or computer/keyboard experience; skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, etc.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
