Job Summary
Assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate patient care for adults with acute and recovering stroke, TIA, seizure disorders, and neurological conditions. Perform serial neurological assessments including NIHSS certification, dysphagia screening, and seizure precautions while administering neurological and medical-surgical medications safely. Manage IV access, perform sterile dressing changes, and recognize early signs of clinical deterioration to activate Rapid Response teams. Provide comprehensive patient and family education on stroke recognition and secondary prevention while coordinating care with interdisciplinary teams for safe discharge transitions. Serve as a clinical resource and role model for newer nurses, participate in unit performance improvement programs, and ensure adherence to infection control and compliance policies.
Required Qualifications
- Nursing degree from an accredited school of nursing
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Two (2) or more years of clinical nursing experience upon hire
- Completion of HUH's Professional Nurses Clinical Advancement Program (PNCAP) and eighteen (18) months of employment at HUH
- Current, active RN license in the District of Columbia
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Current National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to evaluate patient care
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
- Demonstrated competency in neurological assessment
- Able to work in a stressful environment with multiple demands
- Able to resolve conflicts effectively
- Able to prioritize tasks
- Able to respond to emergencies
- Able to react calmly
- Awareness of common safety hazards and precautions
- Able to respond to alarms, codes, telephones, and overhead pages
- Able to read charts, labels, documentation, policies, and procedures
- Able to communicate with staff, visitors, patients, and physicians in clear and concise English
- Every other weekend and every other holiday required
Desired Qualifications
- Prior bedside experience in a neuroscience, stroke, medical-surgical, or progressive care setting
- National specialty certification — Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN), Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (CNRN), or Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN)
- Experience caring for stroke, neurosurgical, or seizure patient populations
- Experience with Soarian Clinicals or a comparable electronic health record
