Job Summary

Assess, treat, and provide holistic care for obstetric, postpartum, and neonatal patients using the Nursing Process. Independently perform clinical skills including antepartum care, delivery room functions, C-section support, newborn assessments, and medication administration. Manage care plans for complex, multi-system patients while adhering to Joint Commission safety goals and infection prevention protocols. Communicate patient status changes to the healthcare team and document compliance with hospital policies. Work nights (6:45pm–7:15am) with on-call availability for emergencies and disasters. Maintain current California RN licensure, BLS, and NRP certification.

Required Qualifications

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California
  • Current BLS certification
  • NRP certification (for experienced OB nurses)
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call
  • Agreement to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours
  • Affirmative duty and responsibility for reporting perceived misconduct, including actual or potential violations of laws, regulations, policies, procedures, or this organization's standards/code of conduct
  • Ability to work well under pressure, meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines
  • Demonstration of cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors
  • Knowledge of growth and development and understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups
  • Ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient's needs
  • Knowledge of Maternal/Fetal complications and nursing responsibilities
  • Knowledge of medications used in the Maternal Child Health Department, including Neonatal dosages
  • Knowledge of Pediatric/Neonatal dosages when administering medications to the newborn
  • Competency in caring for the postpartum patient
  • Knowledge of sterile technique in the Delivery Room
  • Competency in performing physical assessment of the newborn by following established policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of EMTALA guidelines
  • Competency in obtaining a Newborn Metabolic Screen and CCHD
  • Adherence to all nine (9) ANA Code of Ethics for the Nursing profession
  • Adherence to the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals for Hospitals as defined by Scope of Practice
  • Demonstration of proper Infection Prevention skills to include Standardized Protocols or procedures related to central lines and indwelling Foley catheters and Bakari Balloon
  • Competency in assembling and using equipment such as: Oxygen supplies, Oximeter, Radiant Warmer, Neonatal monitor, Suction setups, Catheters, Neonatal emergency supplies, and Bilirubin lights, bili meter, and bili blankets
  • Knowledge of breast-feeding and encouragement of the mother to breast feed
  • Knowledge of postpartum maternity complications
  • Understanding of the use, actions and interactions of drugs used in combination for patients with multi-system problems
  • Knowledge of current developments in the nursing field and Maternal Child Health
  • Competency in admitting, discharging and providing care for neonatal/postpartum and gynecological geriatric patients
  • Knowledge of Antepartum care of the stable mother
  • Knowledge of fetal demise, stillbirth or neonatal death
  • Knowledge of Maternal/Fetal complications and nursing responsibilities
  • Knowledge of role by adherence to NPSGs as it relates to area of practice
  • Understanding of the Nursing Practice Act as defined by the California Board of Registered Nursing
