Job Summary
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for children and adolescents with complex mental health issues while functioning in an "in charge" role as required. Provide crisis intervention, assessment, and treatment within a multidisciplinary team, offering support and counseling to patients and families. Conduct mental health assessments, participate in inpatient programming development, and offer mentoring to students and new staff. Liaise with the Emergency Department and psychiatry on-call services to facilitate referrals and discharge planning. Maintain cultural competence and trauma-informed care principles throughout all patient interactions.
Required Qualifications
- Experience with Crisis Intervention
- Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Current CPR Certification
- Demonstrated culturally sensitive approach to nursing care
- Excellent team work and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of mental health legislation, treatment modalities and experience with crisis intervention or other appropriate combinations of education and experience
- Demonstrated organizational, time management and coordination skills
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple competing workload demands and to manage stressful situations effectively
- Demonstrated excellent critical thinking, communication (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively on an interdisciplinary mental health/health team
- Demonstrated knowledge of child/youth development, cultural competence, trauma informed care
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to Family Centred Care
- Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills with an ability to work with clients to resolve or stabilize crisis
- Demonstrated capacity for coping with challenging clinical situations
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development and skills
- A working understanding of RNAO Substance Abuse Guidelines and application to Paediatric Mental Health
- Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3)
- Bilingualism (French/English)
Desired Qualifications
- Previous psychiatric nursing experience
- Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing
- Certificate in Mental Health Nursing
- Demonstrated awareness of community resources in our region
