Registered Nurse (Endoscopy)

Job Summary

Provide nursing services within designated endoscopy clinics to ambulatory patients requiring diagnostic procedures and critically ill patients requiring therapeutic procedures by working independently and as a member of an integrated care team. Assist the physician during procedures, perform direct nursing care to ensure patient comfort and safety, and collaborate with other health care givers to enhance quality of life. Maintain and advance clinical competence while participating on designated hospital committees and research projects as assigned. Initiate and manage IV therapy, respond immediately to sudden emergencies, and assess patient responses during procedures. Demonstrate expertise in procedural sedation, CPR techniques, and endoscopy equipment setup within a fast-paced, high-volume environment. This temporary position requires a commitment to the entire duration of the appointment for qualified internal candidates.

Required Qualifications

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
  • Completion of recognized post-basic education in gastroenterology/GI endoscopy nursing, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Broad knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a patient/family centred model of care
  • Broad knowledge of BCCNM standards for nursing practice
  • Broad knowledge of Gastrointestinal (GI) anatomy and physiology
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice, Harm Reduction approach and Strengths-based care
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations
  • Broad knowledge of pharmacology, and patient physiological reactions, related to conscious sedation
  • Broad knowledge of nursing problems commonly encountered in an endoscopy environment
  • Demonstrated ability in the initiation and management of IV therapy and administration of IV medications
  • Demonstrated ability to respond immediately and appropriately to sudden emergencies
  • Demonstrated ability to assess patient responses during procedure and to respond appropriately
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and effectively deal with patients and their families, co-workers, physicians, and other health care workers
  • Demonstrated skill in procedural sedation and analgesia
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of and set up of endoscopy equipment
  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload in a fast paced, high volume procedure environment
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position
  • Commit to remain in the appointment for the entire duration of this position
