Job Summary

Assess patient needs, plan and implement care activities, and evaluate nursing delivery through the nursing team. Manage assigned personnel, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensure adherence to established standards of care. Collect pertinent health data, analyze assessment findings, and develop individualized plans of care with patients and families. Operate specialized patient care equipment including defibrillators, ventilators, and central monitoring systems. Perform initial triage assessments, determine acuity, and assign appropriate interventions according to organizational policy. Respond to Code Blue events, assist physicians with procedures such as chest tube insertion and line placement, and account for narcotics security. Float to other areas as assigned, answer call systems, and participate in staff meetings.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse license eligible to practice in the state of Kentucky
  • Current BLS certification
  • TNCC certification
  • Minimum of one year of emergency department experience
  • Completed triage training requirements initially and annually
  • Ability to use a valid and reliable triage system to assign triage acuity and implement appropriate interventions according to organizational policy
  • Ability to document relevant data and triage acuity and communicate significant findings to appropriate team members
  • Ability to assess the skin integrity on trauma, nursing home residents, and incapacitated patients that are admitted to the Emergency center
  • Knowledge of cardiac monitoring
  • Ability to identify cardiac dysrhythmias and begin initial treatment appropriately
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures including chest tube insertion, central line placement, Ewald tube placements, suturing and the ability to assist physicians in the emergency center
  • Ability to respond to Code Blue events in other areas of the facility
  • Knowledge of patient population served development norms
  • Knowledge of appropriate assessments and planning of care for patient population served
  • Competency and knowledge of appropriate equipment for patient population served
  • Appropriate airway management and suctioning technique for patient population served
  • Appropriate awareness for suspected abuse/neglect for patient population served and ability to report them according to protocol
  • Ability to identify and plan for appropriate safety precautions to be taken to prevent injury in the patient population served
  • Competency and knowledge in the proper technique for the administration of medication for the patient population served
  • Knowledge of appropriate technique to obtain vital signs and ability to interpret norms for the patient population served
  • Knowledge of location and use of emergency equipment and drugs for the patient population served
  • Ability to provide education to patient/family based on identified learning needs of the patient population served

  • Ability to perform initial triage assessment to include rapid, systemic collection of data related to the patient's chief complaint
  • Ability to initiate accurate and on-going assessment of problems of patients within the emergency care system
  • Ability to analyze and determine acuity, patient care area, and appropriate interventions
  • Ability to assess the skin integrity on trauma, nursing home residents, and incapacitated patients that are admitted to the Emergency center
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identify cardiac dysrhythmias and begin initial treatment appropriately

  • Ability to assist the Emergency Department Director in the development, implementation, and evaluation of performance improvement indicators to improve patient outcomes and the work environment
  • Ability to respond to Code Blue events in other areas of the facility

  • Competency and knowledge of appropriate equipment for patient population served
  • Appropriate airway management and suctioning technique for patient population served

Desired Qualifications

  • ACLS and PALS certification to be completed by the end of the orientation period
  • CEN certification
  • Ability to document assessment data in a manner that facilitates the determination of expected outcomes and the plan of care
  • Ability to develop a plan of care with the patient/significant other that is individual to the patient's needs
  • Ability to routinely evaluate the plan of care and revise as needed based on patient assessment
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with other health care providers as needed, ensuring continuity of care
  • Ability to implement interventions in a safe, appropriate, and timely manner to aid in the attainment of patient goals
  • Ability to document interventions in an appropriate and timely manner
  • Ability to implement and document patient and family teaching as part of the plan of care
  • Ability to serve as a team leader for a group of personnel providing nursing care to a number of patients
  • Ability to assign tasks or delegate care based on the needs of the patient and the knowledge and skill of the provider selected
  • Ability to operate or supervise safe operation of patient care equipment
  • Ability to account for and ensure the security of narcotics during the assigned shift
  • Ability to contribute to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and others by sharing knowledge and skills, and by providing constructive feedback regarding their practice
  • Attentiveness to detail, record keeping and transcription of orders
  • Ability to promote confidentiality and use complete discretion when discussing information
  • Ability to answer telephone, call system, and greet visitors professionally, and route information received to the appropriate personnel
