Job Summary
Registered Environmental Health Specialist role focused on training in environmental health and sanitation, routine inspections to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, investigation of complaints, sample collection and reporting, and education/outreach to operators and the public. Requires a Bachelor's degree with science coursework, Ohio driver’s license and Sanitarian registration, and proficiency with databases and Microsoft Office. The role emphasizes teamwork, customer service, clear communication, and ongoing professional development, with duties across inspection, enforcement, data reporting, training, and collaboration with community officials and internal/external partners.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with science-related coursework (biology, chemistry, geology, environmental health)
- Valid State of Ohio driver's license and insurance
- Ability to serve as a member of a team
- Proficiency with databases for data querying and reporting
- Minimum of two years of experience as Sanitarian-In-Training (or one year with a Master’s)
- Valid State of Ohio Sanitarian registration (Chapter 4736 ORC)
- Possession or ability to obtain additional licensures within 90 days (e.g., Ohio Pesticide Applicator's license, pool CPO, lead risk assessor, lead abatement contractor, ServeSafe instructor)
- Strong customer service, verbal and written communication, and presentation skills
- Proficiency with PC hardware and Microsoft Office and basic office equipment
- Demonstrated knowledge of applicable local, state and federal regulations
- Proficiency with databases for data querying and reporting
- Experience in education and outreach activities
- Ability to educate operators and the general public on environmental health programs
- Ability to develop and maintain records and use appropriate databases for reporting
- Ability to collaborate with community officials and the public
- Ability to participate in professional development and maintain certifications
- May be required to operate agency-owned fleet vehicles
- Perform other duties as assigned
