Job Summary
Implement behavior plans, collect data, and maintain records as assigned while supporting personal care needs such as dressing, feeding, and toileting. Monitor students during lunch, recess, and hallways, ensuring safety through de-escalation and adherence to Safety Cares protocols when teachers are absent. Communicate effectively with school teams and colleagues while complying with district policies, state regulations, and laws. Participate in assigned trainings and professional development. Perform duties independently in schools, on buses, and during field trips, lifting up to 20 lbs and moving frequently to promote student safety. Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries throughout all interactions.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre-Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education (RIDE)
- Successfully pass the ParaPro Assessment
- Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education
- Obtain an associates or higher degree
- Be at least 19 years of age
- Completion of Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) training course
- Passed the exam and maintain a certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) within one year of employment
- Complete and hold Safety Cares certification
- Some knowledge of modern educational practices and procedures
- Ability to deal with students in a de-escalating and non-confrontational manner
- Ability to maintain order and decorum in assigned areas
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to learn assigned duties and adhere to prescribed procedures
- Ability to maintain accurate records
- Must meet mandated state and federal requirements
- 2 years relevant experience working with children
- Successfully passed a BCI check
- Meet one (1) of the following requirements: Successfully pass the ParaPro Assessment OR Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education OR Obtain an associates or higher degree
- Those hired before January 1, 1999
- Those with certification as a TA in another state
- Those with an associates degree or bachelors degree AND who have completed coursework or other training consistent with the teacher assistant program standards
