Job Summary
Process and coordinate incoming and outgoing patient referrals accurately and in a timely manner, obtaining necessary insurance authorizations and prior approvals for specialist visits and diagnostic testing. Verify patient insurance information, eligibility, and referral requirements while scheduling appointments with specialists and outside facilities. Communicate referral details and instructions to patients, send medical records and physician orders to specialists, and track referral status in the electronic medical record. Follow up on pending referrals to ensure continuity of care and resolve authorization issues promptly. Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and Soma Medical Center policies. Bilingual in English and Spanish required.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
Desired Qualifications
- Previous experience in a medical office, referral, authorization, or patient coordination role
- Knowledge of medical terminology, insurance plans, referrals, and prior authorization processes
- Experience working with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) systems
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple referrals and deadlines
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate patient records
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a healthcare team
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn medical office software and systems
