Job Summary
Provide on-site roadway worker protection for activities on live railroad tracks, including radio communication with dispatchers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits, and granting permission for trains to proceed. Conduct daily job briefings with all personnel and prepare electronic forms such as job set-up documents and daily work reports. Handle and place signs, derails, and tools weighing 15 to 90 pounds while maintaining high communication with supervisors regarding assignments and schedules. Travel extensively across Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, including overnight stays, with daily per diems and mileage reimbursement available.
Required Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- A minimum of 2 years in Maintenance in Way (MOW) and/or Trade Yard & Engine (TY&E)
- UP - West On-Track Worker and Operating Rules
- Able to complete required physical demands and/or task
- Able to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains
- Understand the on track safety training and qualification required of the roadway workers to be protected
- Proficient in the radio procedure for communicating between RWIC/EIC's (Employee in Charge) and assigned work group
- Proficient in performing a job briefing with all the roadway workers within their work location
- Able to place railroad advance warning and stop signs
- Able to install a railroad derail and apply locking device
- Proficiency with electronic communications including email and text as well as standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite)
- Candidates must be willing and able to travel frequently, including overnight stays, in alignment with project schedules and business needs
