Job Summary
The Roadway Worker in Charge (RWIC) oversees on-site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks, coordinating job-site tasks, dispatcher/train communications, and various on-track safety duties. Responsibilities include providing required jobsite protection, conducting daily briefings, submitting electronic reports (job setup forms, daily work reports, invoices), handling signs and derail equipment weighing 15–90 pounds, participating in safety classes and trainings, maintaining clear communication with RWIC supervisors, and upholding integrity and respect in all duties. Travel across California is required, with per diems for meals and hotels and mileage reimbursement on billable days. Proficiency in radio procedures, job briefings, report writing, and rail safety practices is essential, along with completing required education and experience credentials.
Required Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Minimum of 2 years in track and/or construction experience
- Certification in RWIC On-Track Worker and Operating Rules
- Proficiency with electronic communications including email and text as well as standard office applications (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite)
- Know how to effectively warn roadway workers of the approach of trains
- Understand the on track safety training and qualification required of the roadway workers to be protected
