Job Summary
Operate as both locomotive engineer and conductor as needed; inspect locomotives for operational readiness per FRA and company checks; receive train consists and interpret weights, lengths, loads, and car requirements; apply knowledge of territory including terrain, grades, curves, and grade crossings to give prescribed signals and safely operate the train; conduct movement of rail cars, signal crew, and use lantern, hand/flag signals, or radio to indicate start/stop/back-up; observe and relay signals and other indications affecting movement; operate track switches within yard limits or mainline and perform air brake operations; read and understand rules, timetables, train orders, waybills, placards, safety instructions; prepare daily reports and switch lists; inspect train and equipment condition; may couple air/electrical connections; comply with train orders, signals, and railroad rules; monitor track obstructions and diagnose minor malfunctions; notify authorities and prepare incident reports; perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license
- Two years of related work experience and one year of engineer experience; two years of conductor experience preferred
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions; nights, weekends, holidays
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening
