Job Summary
Inspect and repair railcars and tank cars to industry and customer specifications using mechanical skills. Perform repairs including grinding, touch-up painting, and decaling while operating hand and power tools such as air arc, plasma cutting, and welding machines. Conduct pre and post inspections of assigned vehicles and assist in disassembly of damaged units. Maintain a clean work area and ensure full compliance with FRA, AAR, OSHA, and company quality protocols. Complete documented training to operate equipment including forklifts, cranes, and hydraulic booms. Work in year-round outdoor conditions requiring physical stamina and a safety mindset.
Required Qualifications
- Welding experience
- High-school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals and blueprints
- Basic mechanical knowledge and experience with hand & power tools, including heavier air and electric powered tools and cutting torches
- Ability to enjoy outdoor, physical, hands on work with frequent standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling and lifting
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak and communicate effectively
- Basic math skills and ability to work and understand simple mathematical concepts
- Reasoning ability to solve practical problems
- Ability to fully pass the fitness-for-duty examination, pre-employment physical, and pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screenings
- Ability to work in a confined space
- Ability to use personal protective equipment as environmental conditions dictate
Desired Qualifications
- Prior experience as a Carman or Railcar Repair Technician
- Certified E7018 welder
