Job Summary
Repair railcars and tank cars per FRA and AAR rules; inspect and repair railcars using mechanical skills; read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and blueprints; perform disassembly and repairs (mechanical, grinding, painting) in outdoor industrial setting; operate hand and power tools and welding equipment (MIG/MAG, flux-core, stick) with welding standards (AWS D15.1); follow safety and quality protocols, document training, and work in a team to maintain railcar and tank car specifications.
Required Qualifications
- High-school diploma or GED (required)
- Prior experience as Carman or Railcar Repair Technician highly desirable
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and blueprints
- Basic mechanical knowledge and experience with hand & power tools
- Outdoor, physical, hands-on work with frequent bending, lifting, and climbing
- Certified E7018 welder preferred
- Ability to write routine reports and speak/ communicate effectively
- Basic math skills and ability to solve practical problems
- Ability to pass fitness-for-duty examination and pre-employment screenings
- Welding and shop safety knowledge in accordance with FRA/AAR rules
Desired Qualifications
- Certified E7018 welder preferred
- Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals and blueprints
- Must possess basic mechanical knowledge and experience with hand & power tools, including heavier air and electric powered tools and cutting torches
- Must enjoy outdoor, physical, hands on work with frequent standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling and lifting required
- Must be able to fully pass the fitness-for-duty examination, pre-employment physical, and pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screenings
