Job Summary
Railcar Maintenance Tech responsible for performing heavy overhauls and refurbishments on antique railroad passenger equipment and locomotives. Performs repairs, maintenance, and inspections on historic railroad equipment, including diesel locomotives, with tasks spanning general mechanic work, minor fabricating and welding, plumbing and restroom fixtures, HVAC systems, electrical systems, sand/stain/paint interiors, and wood trim installation. Works solo or with a small team, adhering to safety practices and railroad operating rules. Requires self-motivation, ability to work with minimal supervision, and a valid driver’s license. Primary work environment is a railroad setting with outdoor exposure and physical tasks such as lifting and bending.
Required Qualifications
- Must be able to communicate effectively in written and spoken English
- Must be able to interact effectively with volunteers and customers
- General mechanical troubleshooting skills
- Basic welding and metal working skills a plus
- Familiarity working with woodworking tools (hand-held and power tools) preferred
- Experience with operation and repair of hand and power tools and some heavy equipment
- Experience with routine servicing and maintenance of various types of equipment
- Must be able to work alone, or with a small team and be entirely self-sufficient
- Must be self-motivated and a self-starter capable of staying on task with little day-to-day oversight
- Valid Driver’s License
