Rail Operations Planner

Job Summary

Develop and maintain reporting tools for ridership, revenue, fares, and operating performance while managing projects for new or modified rail services. Monitor and analyze services to identify long-term issues, determine rail traffic operating plans, and recommend strategic service design improvements. Lead the development of simulation models to test timetables and investigate impacts from track impairments or increased frequencies. Coordinate project inputs with internal offices, supervise vendors and IT staff, and deliver training programs to ensure continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a diploma/degree in Transportation Planning, Urban Planning, Transportation Engineering, a related field
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program with trade certification
  • Equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrated years of experience in transportation planning or transit infrastructure planning
  • Experience focused on commuter rail or rail-based transit
  • Strong working knowledge in data gathering, cleansing, presentation, and management
  • Strong project management and technical analysis skills including data management, qualitative analysis, and quantitative analysis
  • Hands-on problem-solving experience and aptitude for continuous improvement
  • Strong working knowledge in rail planning, rail operations, and/or track and signal infrastructure
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards, regulations, and code (CROR, etc.)
  • Experience using Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.)
  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • A Criminal Record Check may be required of the successful candidate
  • Candidates must be in their current role for 12 months prior to applying for another role
  • Each applicant must be in good standing (not participating in a Performance Improvement Plan)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge of computer programming (e.g., PowerBI, Python, R, etc.)
  • Proven abilities or proven related abilities in rail scheduling and rail operations simulation software including (e.g., Trapeze, RailSys, OpenTrack, Rail Track Controller related software, etc.)
