Job Summary
Radiation Safety Specialist responsible for providing expert assessment and control of laser and magnet hazards and supporting academic research across Cornell’s Ithaca campus. Work directly with labs to direct safe utilization of laser, non-ionizing, and ionizing radiation equipment in compliance with regulatory requirements; administer and audit programs covering lasers, magnets, and x-ray sources; develop and improve safety training and lab procedures; inspect facilities to ensure regulatory and university requirements are met; develop innovative hazard-solution approaches and foster scholarly goals. Requires BS in health physics, physics, or related fields, 2–4 years of lab-safety experience, proficiency with Class 3B/4 lasers, OSHA/ANSI laser standards knowledge, strong communication, and ability to build effective working relationships. Preferred qualifications include Master's or doctoral degree and additional experience managing laser or radiation safety programs; visa sponsorship not available and relocation not provided. This role emphasizes safety program administration, training development, regulatory compliance, and collaboration with researchers and facilities.
Required Qualifications
- BS in health physics, physics, or related fields
- Two to four years’ experience working in a laboratory or in a laboratory safety program at a university or other research-based organization
- Experience working with Class 3B or Class 4 lasers
- Familiarity with OSHA requirements and ANSI standards for safe use of lasers
- Familiarity with performing laser hazard assessment calculations
- Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships at all levels
- Committed to meeting the needs of the research community while maintaining high health, safety, and compliance performance
- Strong time- and task-management skills
- Familiarity with business software applications (e.g. MS Office, SharePoint)
- Must possess and maintain a valid NYS Driver’s License
- Out-of-state employees must obtain and show proof of a NYS license within 30 days of starting employment
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, medically qualified to utilize respiratory protection (i.e. full-face respirator, SCBA)
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members
