Radiation Control Technician

Job Summary
Measure, assess, and document radiological conditions in the workplace to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations while supporting environmental, safety, and health disciplines. Conduct daily diagnostic imaging coverage, including troubleshooting and decision-making with limited supervision in ABSL-3 environments. Work in varied settings—office, laboratory, and outdoor areas—frequently lifting up to 50 pounds and wearing personal protective equipment such as respirators. Maintain knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NRC, and DOT regulations while balancing customer satisfaction with strict procedure compliance. This role supports the Institute's research and development efforts at Kirtland Air Force Base, requiring access to the facility and willingness to work with hazardous materials and research animals.
Required Qualifications
- Associates Degree in health physics or radiological science
- 3 years experience as a radiological control technician
- comparable knowledge, skills and abilities attained from an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience
- comparable knowledge, skills and abilities evaluated against ANSI/ANS 3.1-1987 technician qualification criteria
- comprehensive knowledge of the principles of radiation physics
- implementation of radiological controls
- demonstrated understanding of applicable OSHA regulations
- demonstrated understanding of applicable EPA regulations
- demonstrated understanding of applicable NRC regulations
- demonstrated understanding of applicable DOT regulations
- mechanically inclined
- ability to troubleshoot
- ability to make decisions with limited supervision
- strong written communication skills
- strong verbal communication skills
- ability to work independently
- ability to work as a part of a team
- solid understanding of the need to balance customer satisfaction with procedure compliance
- professional-level computer skills
- experience with Microsoft Office
- ability to learn department-specific computer systems as needed

- ability to gain and maintain access to Kirtland Air Force base (KAFB)
Desired Qualifications
- experience in an environment under NRC or agreement state regulations
- NRRPT certification
- eligibility for NRRPT certification
- significant knowledge in a research and development environment
- experience in at least one other ES&H discipline, i.e., industrial hygiene, hazardous material handling, biosafety, or industrial safety
- training in shipping Class 7 materials under both DOT and IATA
- experience handling transuranic isotopes
Additional Requirements
- Willing to work with radiation
- Willing to work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious agents are present
- Must pass a post-offer, pre-placement physical examination
