Job Summary

Develop story angles, conduct interviews, and produce original written content on deadline for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's science, conservation, and outreach efforts. Write, revise, and edit stories for public audiences across platforms like Living Bird magazine, All About Birds, and Birds.Cornell.edu. Pitch ideas to the editorial team and collaborate with editors, artists, designers, and subject-matter experts to enhance stories with data visualizations and multimedia. Teach an undergraduate science journalism course and mentor 1-3 student interns. This one-year, full-time contract position includes a 3:2 campus-to-home hybrid arrangement in Ithaca, NY.

Required Qualifications

  • A cover letter

  • Three published writing samples on scientific topics that are written for a non-scientific audience
  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in journalism or the equivalent in experience
  • No more than two years of professional journalism or writing experience
  • Ability to write quickly, clearly, and concisely in collaboration with others
  • Experience generating, reporting, and writing science stories for nonscientific audiences
  • A minimum of three published clips
  • Learning mindset
  • Positive, collaborative spirit
  • Experience modeling values that support inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities

Desired Qualifications
