Job Summary
Manage a varied caseload of housing disrepair litigation, handling cases from pre-litigation through to conclusion in County and Magistrates Court. Deliver high-quality legal advice, conduct advocacy, and support colleagues with policy work and statutory framework interpretation. Work under supervision while maintaining independence to deliver clear written and verbal guidance on routine and high-value claims. This role requires a fully qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives with proven experience in local authority housing disrepair. Hybrid working is available, with a minimum requirement of two days onsite at the Civic Centre and availability to attend court as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Fully qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives
- Knowledge and proven experience of local authority housing disrepair and housing litigation
- Experience and knowledge of undertaking advocacy at County Court and Magistrate Court
- Ability to keep pace with developments in the law
- Good research skills
- Ability to provide clear and concise legal advice
- Familiarity with equal opportunities, good practice and with the council's requirements for diversity and to implement this in all aspects of working
- Ability to develop processes
- Ability to pick up cases with ease
- Strong understanding of the pre-action protocol for housing conditions claims
- Understanding of the litigation process
- Confident handling of housing litigation
- Focus on disrepair cases
- Dealing with cases from pre-litigation through to conclusion of litigation
- Handling high-value and routine disrepair claims
- Handling possession proceedings
- Handling injunctions
- Handling closure orders
- Handling enforcement actions
- Provision of clear written and verbal legal advice
- Representing the Council in County and Magistrates court
- Supporting colleagues and clients with practical, policy work
- Legal guidance including interpretation of relevant bylaws and statutory frameworks
- Work independently
- Deliver high-quality legal advice
- Manage cases from start to finish
- Minimum of 2 days a week on-site at the Civic Centre
- Available to attend Court when required
