Job Summary

R&D Engineer II focused on the NINT HTS magnet design and testing ecosystem. Develop new HTS magnet designs and subsystems, build and commission test samples, and design manufacturing processes and test operations. Build, align, and maintain test equipment for R&D campaigns; perform structural, electrical, and thermal analyses to predict results; gain expertise in testing HTS magnets and related subsystems (power delivery, cryogenic cooling, structures). Support production, integration, and commissioning of SPARC NINT coils; maintain well-documented requirements and risk analyses; collaborate with I&C engineers on instrumentation and data acquisition; maintain documentation (design reviews, wiring lists, schematics, CAD assemblies, BOMs, data acquisition, operations software). Develop custom data-analysis tools and compile test results for reviews; prepare and deliver trade studies, design reviews, test readiness reviews, and data reviews to teams of engineers and physicists. Must-have: degree in engineering/science, 3+ years in R&D/test engineering, instrumentation experience, CAD NX, electromagnetic fundamentals, strong troubleshooting, ability to communicate technically, and willingness to travel and work flexible hours. Bonus points for experience with modeling/analysis software (ANSYS, COMSOL, PLECS), Python/MATLAB data tools, high voltage/current power equipment, test facilities, cryogenic systems, and related manufacturing handoffs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science required (mechanical, electrical, or applied physics preferred)
  • 3+ years’ experience as an R&D engineer or test engineer designing, building, commissioning complex electromechanical systems
  • Experience with instrumentation and control components (thermocouples, sensors, oscilloscopes, transducers, strain gauges, heaters, flow meters, fittings, valves)
  • Experience developing and executing test procedures
  • Proficiency with CAD design (Siemens NX or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with electromagnetic fundamentals (voltage, current, resistance, Ohm’s law, AC/DC, solenoids)
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Experience presenting comprehensive trade studies comparing technical approaches
  • Data reduction and analysis skills for generating and processing results
  • Effective communication of technical topics to diverse audiences
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly
  • Collaboration and active listening within production discussions
  • Willingness to challenge status quo for better methods
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Willingness to travel or work nights/weekends/on-call
  • Work in facility with industrial hazards (heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage/current, pressure systems, cryogenics)
