Job Summary
Conduct all teaching duties for introductory and intermediate courses in Religious Studies, including Ways of Understanding Religion, the Christian Tradition, and Religions of the Book. Deliver in-person instruction across three 10-week quarters, administering evaluations, assigning graded work, and holding weekly office hours. Submit accurate student grades to the Registrar by designated deadlines and develop or utilize approved syllabi for University Core courses. This temporary, non-tenure-track position supports the Department of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic institution in Silicon Valley.
Required Qualifications
- Terminal degree (Ph.D.) in religious studies or a closely-related field
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching religious studies at the college level
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices that promote access and academic success for all students
- Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students
- Previous experience teaching U.S. Hispanic Theology and/or Christian History
- Familiarity and comfort with Santa Clara University's Jesuit Catholic mission and identity
- Ability to teach introductory level courses (Ways of Understanding Religion, the Christian Tradition, Religions of the Book) and possible intermediate courses in Catholic Theology and Hispanic Theology
- Ability to teach no more than two courses in any quarter and no more than four total courses over the fall, winter and spring quarters
- Ability to present classes in-person
- Ability to teach part of the course online if health conditions deteriorate
- Ability to conduct and appear at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner
- Ability to demonstrate a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively
- Ability to assign and evaluate assignments that align with the course description and course learning outcomes
- Ability to provide timely feedback to students
- Ability to hold regular weekly office hours on campus
- Ability to submit student grades that are appropriate, accurate and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline
- Ability to administer numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses
- Ability to teach from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses assigned or work with the Chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee
- Ability to provide evidence of identity and legal authorization to work in the United States
Desired Qualifications
- Applicants who are ABD or possess a Master's degree, accompanied by commensurate academic experience in religious studies or a closely-related field (5-7 years of college or professional teaching)
