Job Summary
Public Works Welder II performs welding on county equipment, vehicles, and bridges under supervision. Field work accounts for 80% of duties, including operating welding equipment, preparing joints, selecting electrodes and current, grinding/sanding as needed, and driving to field locations for repairs. Also conducts minor mechanical repairs, maintains records, follows instructions, and responds to emergencies. Requires the ability to read/write English, perform mathematics for basic measurements, and demonstrate familiarity with SMAW and oxy/acetylene cutting. Must meet safety standards and pass background and substance screens; physical demands include lifting substantial weight and working in outdoor conditions. Certifications/credentials include Colorado CDL Class A with tanker endorsement (or ability to obtain), Welding D1.1 Structural Certification (or ability to obtain within six months), and MSHA certification. Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- One year welding experience (gas and electric) or equivalent
- Colorado Commercial Driver’s License Class A with tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within specified time frame
- Welding Certification: D1.1 Structural Certification (or ability to obtain within six months)
- MSHA certification (or ability to obtain)
- Must read/speak English sufficiently for reports/communications
- Proficiency in SMAW and oxy/acetylene cutting
- Ability to perform physical labor and lift up to 50-110 pounds
- Background check and substance screening required
- Ability to work overtime and during emergencies
- Safety-conscious with ability to work with public
- Knowledge of welding equipment and repair procedures
- Ability to read measurements and perform simple calculations
- Ability to operate or learn to operate heavy equipment and tools
- Willingness to work in field conditions over 80% of time
- Possess strong teamwork and communication skills
