Job Summary
Conduct maintenance and construction tasks for streets, sewer systems, and public facilities, including preparing surfaces for patching, applying asphalt and concrete, and cleaning sewer lines. Operate light and motorized equipment such as trucks, loaders, and rodding machinery while performing heavy physical labor like lifting up to 75 pounds and working outdoors in all weather conditions. Set up traffic control devices, assist in fabricating signs, and maintain public works facilities. Work overtime up to 12 hours daily during fall and winter for leaf collection and snow removal. Requires a Pennsylvania Commercial Drivers' License Class B with Air Brake endorsement and two years of construction experience.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Two years' experience in all aspects of construction and maintenance activities
- Must be able to obtain Pennsylvania Commercial Drivers' License Class B with Air Brake endorsement within 6 months of date of hire and maintain it throughout employment
- Must live within 30 minutes of the Public Works facility (1250 Lindendale Dr. 15228) within 9 months of date of hire
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
- Required to work overtime during hours outside of the normal workday
- Overtime required to drive municipal truck up to 12 hours per day during fall and winter months for leaf collection and snow/ice removal
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance
- Basic techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used in public works maintenance, construction, and repair work
- Occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures related to the work
- Techniques for dealing with the public, City staff, and representatives of contractors in an effective and professional manner
- Effectively and safely perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in the maintenance, construction, and repair of public works infrastructure
- Follow written and verbal instructions
- Communicate effectively in writing, orally, and with others to assimilate, understand, and convey information, in a manner consistent with job functions
- Work effectively with other staff and with the public
- Operate trucks and other light power-driven equipment
- Perform heavy physical and manual labor
- Acquire a general knowledge of division policies and safety procedures as related to public works operations
- Use initiative and independent judgment within established policy and procedural guidelines
- Take a proactive approach to customer service issues
- Organize own work, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments with a minimum of direction
- Work in a safe manner, following established safety practices and procedures
- Represent the municipality, the department, or the organizational unit effectively in contacts with representatives of other agencies, City departments, and the public
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of the work
- Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information
- Driving a variety of vehicles safely
- Must be able to operate heavy equipment and trucks
- Must be able to be on their feet walking pushing a lawnmower, trimming edges with a trimmer or performing other construction and outdoor work for an entire day
- Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate heavy equipment, hand tools and powered landscaping equipment
- Work is performed about 95% outdoors and 5% in the public works facility
- Must be able to work in all type of weather conditions
- Safety procedures and practices are required
- Wearing safety equipment
