Job Summary
Public Works Laborer responsibilities include performing a variety of manual labor tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of the City’s water distribution system. Duties cover installing, repairing, and maintaining water mains, service lines, hydrants, valves and related infrastructure; operating hand tools and small power equipment to dig trenches, lay pipe, backfill excavations; supporting specialized units with water main repairs; responding to emergencies; reading water meters when needed and following engineering blueprints; locating and maintaining underground utilities; marking mains; performing minor equipment maintenance; assisting with customer issue resolution; transporting pipes and appurtenances to job sites; snow removal and salting as required; using PPE and adhering to safety procedures; coordinating with supervisor and other departments; and utilizing the electronic work order system. The role requires physical work in various weather conditions and compliance with pre-employment CORI checks and driving history screening.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to receive and interpret written and oral instructions; provide reports to supervisors
- Must have ability to use tools of trade safely
- Must be in good health, dependable, and able to do hard physical work
- Must possess a valid Massachusetts Class D Driving License
- Must have a safe driving record
- Prior experience in water utility work is preferred but not required
