Job Summary
Executive-level Public Works Assistant Director and County Engineer leading the Road Division (approx. 150 staff) with a $40+ million annual budget. Oversees transportation planning, roads engineering, construction, operations, and maintenance programs; coordinates across departments; ensures compliance with CRAB Standards and state laws; administers the County Road Fund (revenue forecasting, budgeting, expenditures, long-range planning); develops engineering standards and updates to County code, policies, and ordinances; leads capital project planning including the Annual Road Construction Program and 6-Year Transportation Improvement Program; oversees traffic safety programs, bridge inspection, and fish barrier removal; manages staff workloads and performance; maintains customer service focus and represents the County to the Board, state, regional, and local committees; provides executive leadership in strategic goals and cross-departmental coordination; recruits, mentors, and supervises staff in alignment with collective bargaining agreements; serves as a technical resource ensuring organizational alignment and sound engineering practices; builds the Road Division workforce to support current operations and future transportation needs in a rapidly urbanizing environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field
- Ten years of progressively responsible professional experience in engineering, planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance of public or private transportation facilities
- Four years of senior management experience overseeing engineering, operations, and/or maintenance personnel
- Licensed as a Washington State Professional Engineer (PE), or currently in the process of securing Washington State comity
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in civil engineering or a related field
- Experience with Washington CRAB Standards of Good Practice
- Experience with WSDOT Local Agency Guidelines and WSDOT Standard Specifications for engineering and construction
- Licensed as a Washington State Professional Engineer (PE)
- Demonstrated excellence in communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and community engagement
