Job Summary

Conduct proactive patrols by vehicle, bicycle, or on-foot to foster safety and security across the Broward College campus. Respond to assigned calls for service, providing initial assessments, administering first aid, and utilizing Incident Command System principles for critical incidents. Investigate crimes and disturbances by interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, securing scenes, and preparing detailed case reports. Operate communication equipment, surveillance systems, and vehicles while performing community outreach, safety escorts, and traffic direction as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of one year prior experience in related field of work
  • Florida Class D Security Officer License
  • Active law enforcement certification
  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • Ability to successfully obtain CPR with AED certification within six month of initial hire date
  • Ability to use fire extinguishers
  • Ability to use golf carts
  • Ability to use patrol vehicles
  • Working knowledge of public safety, law enforcement, and fire/life safety techniques
  • Basic knowledge of criminal and civil law
  • Basic knowledge of crime prevention methods such as community-oriented problem solving and community-oriented policing
  • Knowledge of and ability to use all systems and procedures relevant to the position which includes, but not limited to, computers and applicable software applications, fire alarms and extinguishers, intrusion alarms, access control and camera monitoring systems, key control, emergency management procedures, vehicles and vehicle jump starters
  • Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, to include the use of a public safety radio system
  • Ability to hear and understand calls for assistance, radio communications, supervisor instructions, emergency announcements, fire alarms, etc
  • Ability to observe and detect signs of theft, dangerous/suspicious behavior, unsecured doors/windows, etc
  • Ability to effectively communicate through written correspondence to include, but not limited to, incident/case reports, email and other electronic communications, and daily logs
  • Ability to physically assist others during an emergency or critical incident
  • Ability to successfully complete all training as provided and/or required and maintain related certifications
  • Ability to work varying work hours and days including evenings, midnights, weekends, and holidays
  • Must be able to successfully complete the Public Safety Academy when scheduled to attend, usually within the first six months of their initial hire date

Desired Qualifications

  • Associate Degree or college credit hours in a public safety related field
  • Prior experience in campus public safety/law enforcement, or related public safety discipline
  • Certification in first aid
  • Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions under stress and during critical incidents
  • Ability to demonstrate department values of service, honesty, accountability, respect, and professionalism
