Job Summary
Public Safety K-9 Armed Officer responsible for conducting person-borne firearm-detection patrols at hospital entrances and key areas, assisting during EMS offloads and high-risk clinical scenarios, and supporting general Public Safety operations. Duties include threat neutralization following departmental procedures, liaison work with law enforcement, maintaining canine equipment and vehicles, delivering security awareness education, and ensuring policy compliance across training, deployments, and incidents. Requires K-9 certification with ongoing maintenance, CHSO healthcare security certification within two years, state armed-guard/licensing requirements as applicable, and 40-hour weekly schedule with night shift coverage. Demonstrated experience in rapid assessment of dangerous situations, effective verbal and written communication, de-escalation, and ability to document activities using standard office tools. Must meet vision, physical, and background requirements and be willing to carry a department-issued firearm as needed.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- 4 years of experience in security/public safety or 30 college credits in Criminal Justice/Police Science with 3 years of security/safety experience
- K-9 Certification (IPWDA) with canine and 16 hours monthly maintenance
- Security Officer Healthcare Certification (CHSO) within 2 years
- Armed license requirements by state (IL FOID, WI CCW, NC Armed Guard license where applicable)
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to carry firearm and meet physical requirements
- Strong communication and de-escalation skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word/Excel and database entry
- Background check, drug screen, pre-placement physical/psychological assessments
- 20/20 vision or corrected vision
- Ability to restrain and assist nursing staff as needed
