Job Summary
Check patient schedules, organize flow, and accompany patients to exam rooms while assisting with transfers, specimen collection, and vital signs. Collect history, perform screenings, chart, and relay instructions to patients and families. Fulfill clerical duties by sending and receiving medical records, obtaining lab and X-ray reports, scheduling appointments, and verifying insurance coverage. Set up instruments, clean exam rooms and equipment between visits, and manage supply ordering and sterilization. Assist physicians with procedures, including minor surgery, dressing application, and suture removal. Handle biohazard waste, perform CLIA-waived testing, and instruct patients on assistive devices. Respond to emergency codes and share patient or staff concerns with the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
- Medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution
- Community college course in medical assisting
- Appropriate certificate indicating passing grade for specific specialty if working in specialty department
- Minimum one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant
- Documented evidence of externship completed in a medical office
- Electrocardiogram (EKG) current experience
- Vital signs current experience
- Venipuncture current experience
- Capillary current experience
- Injection current experience
- Reasoning Ability
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Thorough knowledge in computer information systems
- Medical/surgical asepsis
- Sterilization
- Instrument wrapping and autoclaving
- Checking vital signs or mensuration's
- Physical examination preparations
- Clinical pharmacology
- Drug administration through various routes including injections
- Prescription verifications with physician's orders
- Minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care
- Applying dressings
- Suture removal
- Biohazard waste disposal and monitoring
- Therapeutic modalities
- Instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care
- Laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines
- Quality control methods
- CLIA-waived testing
- Capillary punctures and venipunctures
- Specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum
- Electrocardiography including mounting, emergency triage, and first aid
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
- Travel is primarily local during the business day
- Some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected
