Job Summary

Conduct extensive psychiatric services for mentally ill inmates, including crisis interventions, face-to-face interviews at cell fronts, and initial mental health evaluations. Perform suicide risk assessments, document care using SOAPE formats, and participate in Interdisciplinary Treatment Team meetings. Diagnose and manage psychiatric disorders, prescribe medications, and interpret laboratory results. Make clinical rounds, consult on complex cases, and adhere to mandated reporting requirements for abuse or danger. Provide weekend on-call coverage for emergencies and crisis bed follow-ups. Maintain facility safety, supervise inmate conduct, and implement new treatment programs as directed by senior leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • Licensed by the Medical Board of California as a Medical Doctor (M.D.)
  • Boarded by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN)
  • Boarded by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry (AOBNP)
  • Must be able to provide clinical face-to-face interviews at cell fronts in inmate housing units
  • Must be able to climb stairs and walk long distances
  • Must be available for weekend and off-hours for patient emergencies, Mental Health Crisis Beds follow up, and 5-day follow ups
  • Must adhere to mandated reporting requirements regarding California Psychiatrists, including, but not limited to, reported child and elder abuse, danger to self or others, duty to warn (Tarasoff) reporting and other confidentiality mandates
  • Must wear personal protective equipment, clothing and breathing apparatus to prevent injuries and exposures to blood/air borne pathogens
  • Must be able to effectively apply community standard of practice for psychiatric treatment modalities and ethical standards
  • Must be able to interpret laboratory results and make clinically appropriate referrals to medical services, as appropriate
  • Must be able to determine type of psychiatric and general medical treatment needed
  • Must be able to prescribe changes in treatment when indicated
  • Must be able to administer psychiatric treatment with assistance, as necessary, from other health care providers
  • Must be able to maintain order and supervise conduct of persons committed to the correctional facility in order to prevent escapes or injury by these persons to themselves or others
  • Must be able to protect and maintain safety and security of property, including documentation of unusual occurrence and inventory control of psychological testing material, reference material, computers, and other equipment
