Job Summary
Provide inpatient psychiatric care including admitting, diagnosis, treatment plan development, ward patient management, and discharge coordination. Deliver outpatient coverage Monday through Friday for 12–15 patients daily, handling new referrals, e-consults, and post-discharge follow-ups. Conduct weekend and holiday unit coverage for up to 40 patients, managing crisis interventions and suicide risk assessments. Supervise residents, interns, and advanced practice providers while documenting all services in the VA electronic health record within 24 hours. Participate in quality improvement activities, staff meetings, and peer reviews for tort claims and benefit appeals. Maintain current BLS certification, DEA registration, and fluency in English. Work Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, with weekend and holiday call-back coverage required.
Required Qualifications
- MD or DO with Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Psychiatry (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology)
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or equivalency
- Current DEA registration and National Provider Identifier (NPI)
- Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently
- Current CME in compliance with national/medical association minimum standards
- Must successfully complete VA credentialing and privileging (VetPro) in accordance with VHA Handbook 1100.20 and VHA Directive 1100.21 prior to providing services
- Must provide proof of immunizations/screenings current within the past year, including TB testing (TST or IGRA), MMR and varicella immunity, Tdap, annual influenza vaccination, and Hepatitis B series with bloodborne pathogen training
- Must complete all VA-mandated training, including quarterly BLS and annual courses such as suicide risk management, Military Sexual Trauma (MST) for medical providers, EHR, privacy/HIPAA, and patient safety
- Must not appear on the HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities
- Verifiable evidence of all education and training, including explanation of any gaps in educational history
- Must be available for weekend and holiday evenings for call-back coverage and telephone consultation
- Must be available to work at an alternative location: the Virginia Beach Community Based Outreach Clinic
