Job Summary
Psychiatric Technician assists with ensuring the safety of adults and children with mental illness on an acute psychiatric hospital unit. Responsibilities include delivery of patient care, assisting with activities of daily living, providing secretarial support, leading goals/wrap-up groups, and direct/lead code-secure activities. Acts as a team member by reporting observations and maintaining a safe therapeutic milieu. Observes patients and reports unusual circumstances to a licensed nurse. Organizes, prioritizes, and delivers nursing care per unit standards; completes admission/discharge documentation in chart/EMR; greets admissions, orients to unit routines and safety precautions within 15 minutes; conducts patient safety rounds; assists with meals and nutritional needs; administers or facilitates basic treatments such as EKGs, blood glucose testing, I&O, enemas; advocates for patients and supports privacy and dignity; leads daily goals/wrap-up groups; escalates issues to nursing staff as needed; participates in quality management and performance-improvement activities; supports cost containment and safe, professional environment; selects and uses equipment per policies; performs clerical duties under supervision of licensed nursing staff.
Required Qualifications
- Education: High school graduate or GED required
- De-escalation training must be successfully completed within four months of hire and then maintained
- Must be able to obtain AHA BLS-HCP
- Valid Virginia State Driver's license required in the NRV to transport patients
- Experience with managing patients with explosive potential and/or escalating situations
- Strong communication skills to cope with escalating situations
- Ability to function with minimal supervision
- Ability to learn and participate as a team member
- Clinical skills to work with child, adolescent and adult population including growth and development
