Job Summary
Provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, diagnose mental health conditions, and treat patients with psychiatric disorders within the Alabama Department of Corrections - Tutwiler Prison for Women. Manage medication including prescribing, adjusting, and discontinuing drugs as needed while maintaining accurate patient records and responding to psychiatric emergencies with immediate interventions. Coordinate educational training activities and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop treatment plans ensuring compliance with State and Federal mandates. Work under the supervision of a psychiatrist alongside correctional officers to support a diverse population with complex needs.
Required Qualifications
- Current, unrestricted license as a Nurse Practitioner with Psychiatric certification in STATE
- A current DEA registration in State
- Ability to obtain BLS CPR Certification (AHA preferred)
- Ability to interact effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds, including those with mental health or substance abuse issues
- Experience with underserved and marginalized populations, including those with mental health and substance use disorders
- Strong communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse individuals, including other medical professionals and correctional staff
- Must possess strong written communication skills and have strong computer skills
- Strong assessment and diagnostic skills
- Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards
- Able to maintain confidentiality of all proprietary and/or confidential information
- Display integrity, professionalism and be able to adhere to a Code of Conduct and comply with all facility(s) correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements
- Must pass the facility's criminal background check and drug screening
- Must have the ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks like CPR, all while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift
Desired Qualifications
- OR a Physician Assistant with a minimum of 1 year of relevant Psychiatric work experience
