Job Summary

Lead and support the engineering, design, and implementation of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution substations. Develop protection and control design engineering packages, including relay functional drawings, communications diagrams, and bills of material, for Dominion's 11kV–500kV substation projects. Coordinate with cross-functional partners such as Project Managers and Field Technicians to ensure complete and constructible design deliverables. Independently develop system protection design packages for complex projects using applicable standards and CAD software. This role is part of the Virginia Electric Transmission-Substation Engineering department, supporting the safe and reliable operation of the electric grid.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • 5-6+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in a technical role
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in a technical role
  • Working knowledge of transmission lines, distribution feeders, and major substation equipment
  • Familiarity with electromechanical and/or microprocessor-based protection and control systems
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical design documents such as one-line diagrams, relay functionals, logic diagrams, elementary diagrams, and wiring diagram
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and standard design practices to develop practical design solutions and meet project requirements and independently produce complete, high-quality project deliverables, including engineering drawing packages, bills of material, wire tags, cable memos, and For Wiring Only packages, in alignment with project requirements
  • Experience using CAD design software such as AutoCAD - Electrical
  • Ability to review designs for accuracy and ensure alignment with applicable standards, codes, and company practices
  • Strong planning, organization, and time management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and prioritize effectively
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making capability
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Comfortable coordinating with cross-functional teams to support project development
  • Strong proficiency with standard computer applications (e.g., Bluebeam, Microsoft Applications: Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, OneNote, etc.)
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and use technical software
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord
  • Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license
  • 4-year Engineering Technology degree or 4-year degree in Engineering (not ABET-accredited)
  • 4-year degree in Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Engineering or other technical related discipline
  • 4-year non-technical degree and post-graduate degree in Engineering Technology or Engineering (not ABET-accredited)
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be available for weekend shifts
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Valid U.S. work visa or employment authorization

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in the electric utility industry
  • substation Physical or Protection & Control (P&C) engineering experience
