Job Summary
This full-time Protected Species Observer (PSO) Support role involves observing, recording, and reporting wildlife from a medium or large vessel. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with NOAA, NMFS, and USFWS requirements, documenting interactions with protected species, and maintaining safe vessel practices. Candidates should have a Bachelor of Science in a related field, BOSIET certification, NMFS PSO approval, and at least 3 years of relevant experience. Strong skills in observation, communication, and basic data management are essential. Physical capability to handle rough seas, lift weights, and meet safety protocols is required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in related field required
- Must be current with BOSIET certification, or capable of obtaining prior to start of project
- Hold NMFS PSO approval
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a PSO or MMO
- Strong knowledge of Endangered Species Act (ESA) and Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA)
- Capable of working on rough seas during challenging weather conditions
- Must be able to ascend/descend stairs or ladders on the vessel during all weather conditions
- Ability to regularly lift 25 lbs. and occasionally lift 50 lbs.
- Willing to travel to remote locations for the project
