Job Summary
Program Counsel, Policy Reform focused attorney supporting FIRE’s Policy Reform and Campus Rights Advocacy teams. Responsibilities include corresponding with students, faculty, and administrators to revise college regulations on expression; drafting and editing letters, memoranda, and policy review letters tied to recent court rulings and legislation; managing intake and referrals for policy-related cases; serving as liaison between program directors; assisting with litigation-related tasks and amicus briefs; writing articles for Newsdesk; copyediting colleagues’ documents; and collaboration across departments. Requires J.D. from an ABA‐accredited law school, willingness to obtain PA or DC licensure if not already licensed, strong legal writing and research abilities, familiarity with higher education conduct codes and policy frameworks, and the ability to work in a hybrid schedule based in Philadelphia or Washington, D.C.; moderate travel and occasional after-hours work expected.
Required Qualifications
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
- Bar admission or willingness to obtain licensure in Pennsylvania or District of Columbia
- Legal writing and copy-editing skills
- Experience or strong interest in First Amendment/free expression policy and higher education law
- Ability to communicate with students, faculty, administrators, and the media
- Ability to research and analyze case law, regulations, and legislation relevant to policy reform
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage policy-related case referrals
- Experience with amicus briefs and litigation support is a plus
- Ability to travel moderately; flexibility with weekends/evenings as needed
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
