Job Summary
Assist the classroom teacher in planning, preparing, and implementing the instructional program for Behavioral Education Center students by demonstrating effective instructional and behavior management skills. Follow written lesson plans for group and one-on-one programming while assisting with classroom preparation, monitoring student progress records, and developing data collection procedures. Provide personal assistance with toileting and dressing, deliver students to programming or bus transportation, and enforce behavioral limits including time out, physical restraint, and after-school detention procedures. Participate in IEPTs, parent conferences, and staff meetings while communicating effectively with teachers, parents, and other staff. Maintain ethical handling of confidential information and follow Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma
- Valid drivers license
- Physical strength and ability to physically manage students requiring physical management/restraint
- Previous experience as a program assistant or experience working with children with emotional or behavioral problems
- Ability to work collaboratively with others and be willing to assist others in other classrooms/situations when needed
- Ability and willingness to take direction and constructive criticism and follow through with teacher plans and team decisions
- Ability to remain objective, calm, and neutral when responding to a student's inappropriate behaviors
- Ability to set and maintain behavioral limits in a consistent manner
- Ability to 'actively listen' to students and relate to them in a positive, supportive, and reinforcing manner
- Willingness to follow through with program behavior management procedures including time out, physical restraint, and after-school detention, which includes staying after school with detained students and transporting them home (with another adult) when necessary
- Regular and reliable, in person attendance
- Demonstrate ethical handling of confidential student and parent information
- Demonstrate reliable attendance and punctuality
Desired Qualifications
- Associates degree or completion of two years college equal to 60 semester hours
